2007 was the year of the Marlin but our bread and butter is still the Sailfish. The majority of tourist that come to Costa Rica want to catch a Sailfish and Costa Rica has some of the best Sailfish waters in the world.
On the subject of tourist I would like to remind the guys on the Charter Boats to help your clients get good photos. Many of the people you take fishing will never catch a big fish again. If they have a good photo they will tell fish stories for years to come. Some helpful hints; position the fish correctly, make sure there is enough light, clear out all the rods, deck chairs and other obstacles between the camera and the fish, make sure you get the client and the fish in the photo, take a bunch of photos hopefully one will be good.
January Fishing Report
January is the first full month of our high season fishing and I am happy to say the fishing has been good and getting better. The Marlin fishing has been steady, the Tuna and Dorado bite has been average and there were some boats with really good Sailfish days towards the end of the month. There have not been many inshore reports because most of the boats are going offshore.
Congratulations go out to Captain Marvin and the crew of The Bite for taking first place in the 2008 Los Suenos Signature Billfish Series. They released 6 Striped Marlin and 22 Sailfish. It was a good day for the Maverick boat company with their boats coming in win, place and show now I want one.
Overall the Tournament was a success. The Sailfish numbers were a little disappointing but the Marlin numbers were incredible. Several captains mentioned it as one of the best Blue Marlin bites they had ever heard of several boats released 5 and 6 Marlin on the first day of the tourney.
Captain Dana on the Hoo’s Your Daddy took a group from Michigan out for a great day they caught 9 Sail, 2 Grouper, 3 Snapper and a big Dorado.
Captain Dave on the "Miss Behavin" caught a 400 pound Blue Marlin, a 500 pound Black Marlin, a few Tuna and a couple Dorado he called it one of his best days.
Captain Brandon on the Fish Whistle had a few really good days in January. He took some friends out from Minnesota for a half day trip recently and they went 3 for 5 on Sailfish, caught a 40 pound Dorado for supper and raised a big Blue Marlin.
Captain Marvin and the guys on The Bite had a few nice Sailfish days in January word on the street is they released 25 Sailfish in one day. Winner, winner chicken dinner.
Captain RJ on the "Predator" was busy in the month of January. He had several good days for food fish at the 26, and several good days at the craters with some nice Marlin releases.
Febuary Fishing Forecast --
Hopefully the improved Sailfish numbers will continue in February.
It seems like the Marlin fishing is here to stay so look for above average numbers again in February, especially for those that target Marlin and go further and fish harder.
There will also be lots of Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo caught by boats going offshore for Sailfish and Marlin.
The charter boats out of Los Sueños are all starting to get booked up for high season. If you are traveling to Costa Rica in the next few months and are planning on fishing make sure you get a boat reserved...they may be hard to get.
