Hola,

I’m sorry for the lack of reports the past few days but I have a new laptop and I have had some “technical difficulties”.

There has not been much as far fishing to write about the past 3 or 4 days.  The good news is nobody is getting skunked.   There are not many boats going out but those that do seem to be averaging 2 or 3 Sailfish and a few Mahi Mahi.   There have been a couple Marlin sightings and one boat reported a few 20 pound Yellowfin.   Most of the boats are fishing 25-30 miles out.

The inshore bite has been decent.   I talked to a couple guys that caught 3 or 4 Roosterfish on half day trips this week.

May 8, 2008

I was having a beer with Captain Kevin from the “Hoo’s up” and going through his fishing logs for 2008.   He fished offshore 70 days total since January 1st.  In that time he caught 238 Sailfish, 32 Marlin and 86 Dorado.   He fished 15 additional days inshore but didn’t keep track of his fish.

Hola,

The fishing the past few days has been fair. Not many boats have been going out but those that do are catching some fish. Most of the boats I talked to caught 2 or 3 Sailfish and a few Mahi Mahi. Nobody is getting skunked at least.

Captain Carlos on the “R&J” went 5 for 7 on Sailfish and added a nice Mahi Mahi.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” went 2 for 4 on Sailfish and bagged a 50 plus pound Mahi. He said the 4 guys had a great time going through 48 beers and a bottle of Rum….good thing they took a taxi home.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” had a couple decent days catching 4 Dorado and 4 Roosterfish yesterday. Today they caught a bunch of Dorado in the 20 pound range and missed a striped Marlin.

The fishing the past few days has been nice mixed bag.  The Sailfish bite has slowed a little but everything else has picked up.  The Marlin bite is good for both Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin.  The Yellowfin Tuna bite has picked up with lots of boats reporting a few 30 pound fish.  The Dorado bite has also been good…with some big ones reported.

Most of the boats were fishing 25-30 miles out around the craters.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” Caught 2 Sailfish, a Striped Marlin a few Tuna and a Dorado.

Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and three 50 pound Dorados.

Captain Dana on the “Hoos your Daddy” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, several Yellowfin and a couple Dorado.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” did a half day trip about 15 miles out and caught 4 Dorado…a couple 30 pounds and a couple 20 pounds.

The Sailfish numbers out of the Los Suenos Marina have been just average the past few days. Boats are fishing 25-30 miles offshore and picking up 3 or 4 Sailfish and a Mahi Mahi or two. The Marlin bite picked up for a couple days out by the craters but it then slowed.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” did a inshore 1/2 day trip yesterday and caught 2 nice Roosterfish. He said there was bait around the rocks but they could only manage a couple Roosters.

Captain RJ on the “Predator” has a brand new engine and did a half day trip yesterday and went 2 for 3 on Sailfish and caught a 20 pound Dorado.

Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your daddy” was rumored to have caught a Marlin yesterday and today….more details to come.

Captain Carlos on the “R&J” had a a great day on Wednesday with 4 Sailfish, a Stripe Marlin, a Blue Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and a Dorado….That’s a super slam in CR I think.   Then today they went 3 for 5 on Sailfish and caught a nice Dorado….they were fishing out by the craters.

It’s been a tough couple days fishing out of the Los Suenos Marina. There has been some green water move in and it seems to have scattered the bite. The fish are obviously still out there if boats were raising 40 Sailfish 3 days ago. But the past few days the guys have been lucky to raise 5 or 6 Sailfish offshore.

Part of the problem is not many boats have gone out this week. The guys in the marina do a good job of communicating with each other where the fish are. But if only 5 boats go out that day they are not going to cover much ground and there is not going to be any reliable info on the bite and it’s going to take longer to find the fish.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” tells me he has a new idol and his name is Larry. Larry is 81 years old and fished with Kevin for 3 days. Kevin was amazed at how he moved around the boat for 3 full days…especially since it’s been choppy and a little rough out there. Larry’s 3 day total included 13 Sailfish, 2 lost Marlin, a 60 pound Mahi Mahi and some Snapper, Roosterfish, Amber Jack, Jack Crevalle, Moray Eal and a few other I don’t remember…I think we all hope to be like Larry when we are that age.

The big Marlin in the photo above was caught on the “Agwe” with Captain Tom during the first week of April.  The fish was caught on 20 pound test by Andy from England was the angler…cheers mate.

April 28, 2008

The bite yesterday was slow for almost everyone.  I heard rumors of a couple boats doing well 45 plus miles out but the majority of the fleet struggled to find the fish.

On Saturday there were couple boats that raised over 40 Sailfish…and then yesterday those same boats raised only 10 Sailfish.

The Sailfish are out there…it may take a day or two for the fleet to get back on the bite.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” went 3 for 5 on Sailfish and added a big Dorado for the grill.

Hola,

The fishing the past few days out of the Los Suenos Marina continues to be good.  The bite has moved in to between 25 and 30 miles and everyone is catching fish.

The James B. party bottom fished with Captain Bill  in the morning but the bite was slow so they went offshore and released a half a dozen Sails.  They were Sailfish virgins when they came to Costa Rica…not anymore after 2 great days with Bill.

The Hix Party had a strange day on the “Sailfish”, they raised 20 Sailfish before noon but could not get a fish to the boat.  The had several multiple hook ups but couldn’t get a hook to stay.  The finished the day with 3 Sailfish releases and a big Dorado for the dinner table.

The Buckners went out with Captain Bill yesterday and went 8 for 12 on Sailfish.  I don’t think they had ever caught a Sailfish before…the captain said they were pleased.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” went 3 for 5 on Sailfish, they also caught a nice Dorado and a nice Striped Marlin…they fished 25 miles out.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” averaged 6 Sailfish and one Dorado per day last week.

Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” may have the catch of the week…maybe even month with a 750 plus pound Black Marlin.  Tim and the buys were fishing the “26″ when the hawg came tight.  They estimated the fish at 17 plus feet.   The “26″ area has a history of big Blacks…this is one more for the list.

Captain George on the “Barrilata” went 3 for 7 on Sailfish with a nice Dorado.

Captain RJ on the “Predator” is back in the water with a new engine.

Thanks

Hola,

A couple days after the full moon and the bite is still good out of the Los Suenos Marina. The bite moved out some so the guys are having to run a little farther…about 40 miles yesterday. Everyone is catching fish and it’s been a mixed bag of mainly Sailfish with a few Marlin and Mahi Mahi.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 8 for 12 with the James B. party fishing 40 miles out. I think they were all Sailfish Virgins…not any more. They are fishing with Bill again on the 24th…go get em boys.

Captain Jeremy took Willis and some friends out offshore…they had a OK day. They released 2 Sailfish but lost 3 more Sails, a big Mahi Mahi and a Marlin. Ifs and buts were candy and nuts.

Captain George on the “Barrilata” went out about 30 miles with Mike and his wife from North Carolina. They caught 2 Sailfish, a “3 foot long” Mahi Mahi and a 300 pound Black Marlin…not bad for some panga guys.  Mike said a 20 inch Grouper was the largest fish he has ever caught.  Mike was very very happy, showing everyone in the hotel lobby his photos…he admitted that Marlin whooped his ass.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” released 7 Sailfish lost a nice Mahi Mahi and raised a little Blue or Striped Marlin.

Thanks

There has been some rain showers in the area and it’s full moon time but it hasn’t seemed to slowed the bite out of the Los Suenos Marina. It’s Sunday night so the reports are slow to come in but early news is good news. Most of the boats are fishing 30-35 miles out, still mainly to the South. Almost everyone is raising double digit Sailfish numbers, there were also a few Tuna reported, some Dorado and some Marlin sightings.

Captain Daniel and the guys on the “Spanish Fly” took some buddies from Jaco out and went 8 for 13 on Sailfish and caught a 40 pound Yellowfin Tuna. They cooked up fresh grilled Tuna with a garlic sauce right on the boat…mmm. This was the trip I was going to go one but Karma bit me in the ass and one of my employees didn’t show up for work so I couldn’t go fishing…that’s for all the times I pulled that crap when I was 18 years old.

Captain Jeremy and the guys on the “R&J” fished about 30 miles out and released 7 Sailfish and raised 2 Marlin.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” went 7 for 10 on Sailfish and bagged a nice Dorado for dinner.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 9 for 21 with the same family he took out on Friday. Bill said they were a family of good fisherman. The father said that in his 50 years of fishing all over the world he just had his 2nd and 3rd best fishing days ever. The daughter said she wanted to take Bill and his crew back to Florida with them they were so good.

Captain Kevin was on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” today fishing with his family. They started doing some live bait fishing about 15 miles out…they raised a big Black Marlin but couldn’t get a hook up, they did release 4 Sailfish using “live bait”…after that they ran offshore a bit and caught 4 more Sailfish trolling.

If you have never used “live bait” for Sailfish before try it sometime. The boat is in slow slow troll and your bait is like a top water bait…you have to be really patient setting the circle hook. The bite is usually close to the boat so you get hard runs and a great air show. It’s like bobber fishing for 100 pound crappie that jump all over.

Thanks
